We just got back from a week long vacation to Toronto and Canada was on my mind. I realized that I had no knowledge of the history of Canada so I found this book on Amazon and decided to pick it up and give it a read.
The sad truth is it was boring. There were a lot of typographical errors as well as date errors. For example, it would be talking about an even that occurred in the 1600s but then it would list 1980. Each insert is only two pages long so the reader doesn't get a good history of each event. Also, history is a fluid, continuous thing so breaking it up into 50 distinct events doesn't allow the reader to get a nice flow of things.
The book does get a little better in the more contemporary history section but I finished this book realizing I hadn't learned much. It needed a little more depth to each of the events and a little more continuity. But to be fair, it is hard to do an entire history of a country in 50 events, but Weber attempted it. If you are looking for a more in-depth history of Canada, I'd suggest you look elsewhere.
I love to read and to discuss books. My preferred genre is sci-fi but I like to read mostly anything.
