I am many things in life, nerdy being one of them. In fact, probably my most nerdy characteristic is my absolute love of playing Dungeons and Dragons. When I came across this book on my Kindle, I was cautiously optimistic after reading all of the great reviews, so I dove in.
The book is about a group of friends who gather together one night to play Caverns and Creatures (C&C) but invite an unknown CM (DM for you D&D folk). When he arrives dressed up in his velvet cape, they quickly realize he takes this game a bit too seriously. After making fun of him for quite a while, they are instantly transported into the game as their level 1 characters they just rolled up.
I can't really remember a time when I read a book that I laughed so much or highlighted so many passages so that I could go back and reread. Everything about this book was phenomenal. Bevan uses potty humor and makes the reader sincerely feel like they are just sitting around the table taking in a game. I have often thought about my character in terms of real world, so this was a neat idea to see drawn out.
Each character was so unique and developed differently, that it was a nice eclectic mix of people to go on an adventure with. From the newbie to the veterans, this book utilizes favorite spells, quests, and predicaments that they have get themselves out of. The ending was perhaps my favorite part as it set up perfectly for book two (I believe there are currently 4 books out in this series but not 100% sure on that).
If you are a fan of the game, either seriously or casually, buy this book and enjoy it. I texted my entire D&D group several times different passages in the story that could have literally been taken right out of our game. Unbeknownst to me, someone in our group had already read this story and shared my praise. I can't wait to jump into the next book. If it is as half as fun as this one, it'll be a 20.
I love to read and to discuss books. My preferred genre is sci-fi but I like to read mostly anything.
