This book was recommended to me by a co-worker I had during my residency (shout out to you, Annette!) and I definitely see why. The story centers around two teens that go and stay with their relative while their parents are away during the summer but things aren't quite what they seem. Everything has a "mystical" feel to it and they soon discover why. The entire farm is a keeping ground for mystical creatures - fairies, centaurs, ogres, etc. But like any good story, there is an evil power that breaks loose and threatens to end life as we know it. Sure, why not, right? Sprinkle in some magic, humor, and mischief and -BAM!- there's Fablehaven.
The story is very well written and fast paced but it does take a few chapters for things to really start going. There's a nice number of things you have to figure out in the book and a few twists that keep things interesting. The writing is YA and it shows but this isn't a bad thing. This is a story that excels because of it.
Fablehaven is the first in a series but I haven't moved on to the next one yet. I want to but there's just so many good books out there that keep distracting me. Do yourself a favor and pick this up.
I love to read and to discuss books. My preferred genre is sci-fi but I like to read mostly anything.
