I had long wanted to get into the Drizzt Do'Urden series but didn't really know where to start. After a night of playing some good old fashioned D&D, I decided to jump in and purchased this first book. Great decision!
The story introduces us to Drizzt Do'Urden, a son in the House Do'Urden, set in the world of the Underdark, in the city of Menzoberranzan (lost so far?). In this society, women are the rulers and men are underlings and warriors, in everyone's attempt to please Lolth, the Spider Queen. Chaos reigns supreme.
Each House has its place in the pecking order and Houses try to move up by defeating those ahead of it. If unsuccessful though, the attacking House is wiped out completely. The story starts one evening as House Do'Urden is attempting to defeat House DeVir and the Matron is giving birth to what is hoped to be a daughter. Spoiler alert: it's not. It's Drizzt.
The book explores his youth and training with the weapons master as well as him leaving to go to Academy to learn how to be a warrior but his morals just don't fit in with this society. He's a skilled warrior but he does not like killing other dark elves. This is shown as weakness in this society and eventually pits him against his own family.
The book perfectly sets up the next one which I hope to get to read soon. Highly recommended for fantasy fans and I can now see why the hype surrounding this character is as high as it is.
I love to read and to discuss books. My preferred genre is sci-fi but I like to read mostly anything.
