DISCLAIMER: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
PUBLICATION: Rebellion / Solaris, June 14th, 2016
Kel Cheris is a disgraced captain who, after not following orders and using unconventional war tactics and strategies, is asked to help recapture the starship, Fortress of Shattered Needles. But to do so, she must team up with the dead (undead) brilliant war mind, Shuos Jedao. The only problem is that Jedao is crazy. Many years ago, he committed two massacres, one of which was his own army.
I have to come out of the gate here with honesty. I literally did not understand what was going on in 84% of this book. The writing was confusing, the government utilized in this book (the "hexarchate") is confusing, the names were so similar to each other, the plot was muddied, and the whole project just fell flat. This book is in need of an editor: change the names, clean up the story line, and be more direct with the writing.
There's not much I can say about this book so I apologize for the short review. But on a good note, some of the world-building is nice (most of it is confusing), the main character is very likable, and the cover art is great.
But that's it.
Check out some of Rebellion / Solaris other offerings. They're a great UK based sci-fi publishing company that has some incredible selections. Unfortunately, this wasn't one of them.
I love to read and to discuss books. My preferred genre is sci-fi but I like to read mostly anything.
