In the future, NASA sends an exploratory and research team to Mars to conduct experiments and gain knowledge. An accident happens, one man dies, crew packs up and leaves before any more casualties occur. Dead man turns out to be alive but unconscious. Now he has to find his way off of the planet.
This book is insane in every way possible. If you are a fan of hard science fiction, this is for you. If you are completely scientifically illiterate, perhaps stay away. The amount of detail and research that Weir has put into making this scientifically accurate is incredible and it shows. Few books keep me awake at night but this was one of them. I literally couldn't turn the pages fast enough because I was devouring every page. When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about reading it. Only a handful of books have every shaken my like this one.
The suspense is just that, suspenseful. The author takes his time painting this portrait and I felt like I appreciated the story because of it. Oftentimes, I find that long books are unnecessarily long but this wasn't one of those times. Long story short, READ THIS BOOK.
I just hope the movie coming out this fall does it justice. Don't let me down Matt Damon!
I love to read and to discuss books. My preferred genre is sci-fi but I like to read mostly anything.
