Anyone who knows me knows that my family and I are HUGE Disney fans. I mean, certifiable fanatics. So I was intrigued when I saw that Carl Hiaasen had written an essay talking about the negative impact Disney has had on Florida. This had to be a book filled with blasphemy but I decided to keep an open mind and keep reading.
If I could describe this book using a toy from the 1990s, it would be Stretch Armstrong. That's the only way I can justify some of the connections Hiaasen makes. For example, he lives in Key West and is upset that Disney built a Key West resort because he believes people will go to the Disney Key West instead of visiting the real Key West. Now, I'm not saying that isn't true but I can't believe people would plan a trip to Key West but then get to Disney World and say "Maureen, let's cancel that trip! This is good for me!" I've been to the Keys and I've been to the Key West Resort and they don't have much in common.
The book is filled with ridiculous examples and kind of gets boring after a while - and that's saying something for a 100 page book!
Personally, I didn't like it but I am admittedly biased. In my mind, Disney can do no wrong. So Carl, just "let it go", hope for a "great big beautiful tomorrow" and stick to fiction.
I love to read and to discuss books. My preferred genre is sci-fi but I like to read mostly anything.
