DISCLAIMER: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
It all starts late one evening when the Conti family goes next door to Graham and Cynthia's house for an adults-only party. Leaving their newborn baby, Cora, asleep in their house 10 feet away, Anne is on edge the entire time while her husband, Marco, seems to be living it up - and flirting with Cynthia a bit too much. Drinks are poured and the hours start clocking by and before they know it the clock strikes 1:00 am. Anne pulls her husband away and they head back home to witness firsthand something so terrible and horrendous, it will shake them to their core for years.
I was literally grabbed and pulled into this book by page three. Lapena is firing on all cylinders here as she writes one of the most suspenseful, page turning thrillers I have ever read. Gripping, shocking, and filled with mind-boggling plot turns, The Couple Next Door does no wrong. Lapena literally hits every right note with this book.
I have read other reviews (most of which were praising the book) that complained about this novel but I honestly cannot wrap my mind around any negative critique of this book. It appears as the Lapena has been writing her whole life and has finely polished her craft. With a pace that never lets the reader put the book down, she keeps pulling rabbits out of hats, dazzling the reader with every turn of the page.
Halfway through, I must admit, I was a little disappointed. I had believed she had revealed the answer to the big mystery a bit too early, but as I progressed, I realized this story had multiple layers and she was unfolding them slowly, meticulously, letting the reader know only what she chooses to at that time, ultimately leading to one of the most shocking twists I've ever read.
Buy this book. Read this book. You absolutely will not regret it.
I love to read and to discuss books. My preferred genre is sci-fi but I like to read mostly anything.
