A few years ago two girls went missing, Nicole and Megan. Fortunately, Megan escaped and went on to tell her story in the form of a best-selling novel. Nicole was never found. Her sister, Livia, remained heartbroken but has recently accepted a residency position as a medical examiner. When a body comes across her table for an autopsy, she begins to uncover things she never thought possible, certain things that could solve the mystery of where her sister went. And when her search takes her across state lines, she begins to piece together something that could forever change her life. Cold cases might not be so cold, after all.
In typical Donlea fashion, this is a fast-paced, no holds barred, thrill ride of a novel. After jumping onto the scene with his debut, Summit Lake, Donlea makes another splash in the murder mystery genre, but this time he is better than ever. From twists and turns to new pieces of evidence being brought to light, Donlea really knows how to craft a suspense novel. Gripping, challenging, and just an overall perfect suspense novel, The Girl Who Was Taken needs to be on the top of your summer to-read list.
Everything I loved about his debut is made even better here. He has gotten more experienced with letting the reader wander down paths before another door opening, something vital in writing a good mystery novel. If he continues with this progression, I can see him as the next international, world renowned, best-selling author in his genre. This book really is that good.
One of my favorite things about this book is how quickly paced yet slowly unraveling the story line is. Unlike other authors, he doesn't show his hand too early out of the gate. He lets the suspense build, like a giant fire growing and smouldering, before the final ending is revealed. I was literally 80% through this book and I had no idea how it was going to end. Donlea has this gift to create endings that leave the reader speechless. He creates these characters, story lines, and settings that are truly second to none.
If you are a fan of Donlea, murder mysteries, or just wonderfully written books that keep your attention from page one, pick this up. It is truly one of the literary highlights of the summer. If you decide to pick this book up, get ready for an intense, roller coaster of a book.

I love to read and to discuss books. My preferred genre is sci-fi but I like to read mostly anything.
