Arthur Dent, a quiet Englishman, awakens one morning to the sobering news that his house is about to be destroyed to make way for an intergalactic freeway. Not even aware of other life forms in the galaxy, Arthur is dumbfounded, particularly when his friend, Ford Prefect, swings by on a spaceship to pick him up minutes before his house, and all of Earth, are destroyed. Ford, an out-of-work actor, is actually an editor for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, a must have staple for any galaxy traveler. Soon they meet up with a whole cast of memorable, strange, and laugh out loud funny characters including Marvin the Paranoid Android, Zaphod Beeblebrox, a two-headed alien who just happens to be president of the galaxy, and Zaphod's girlfriend, Trillian.
This book is hilarious if you are a fan of dry, subtle humor. Even if you are not, I still recommend it because there are numerous quotes and moments that have become pop culture legends (i.e. always bring a towel, "Don't Panic!", 42, etc). Rated as one of the best sci-fi novels of all time, THGTTG is a book that just can't be replicated. Douglas Adams has a sharp wit about him that makes this novel work. If you're reading this book and you begin to wonder, "What the heck am I reading?", don't feel alone. But that's what makes this book great. Adams later went on to write four sequels if you happen to love this one, but be warned: after the next sequel, they all go downhill.
Definitely check this out if you haven't already. Fast, fun, funny, sci-fi classic that shouldn't be missed.
I love to read and to discuss books. My preferred genre is sci-fi but I like to read mostly anything.
