Having finished the Dragonlance Chronicles series (Autumn, Spring, and Winter) earlier this year, I took a break from the fantasy genre but decided to jump back in. I asked Margaret Weis via Twitter what I should read next and her response was to read the Dragonlance Legends series with book one being Time of the Twins.

Most of our familiar characters are back with the story centered mainly around Raistlin, Caramon, Crysania, and Tasselhoff. Caramon and Tasselhoff team up and together realize the best way to stop Raistlin from becoming evil is to go back in time and stop Fistandantilus from ever pushing him to the dark side (I know its not Star Wars but the "dark side" just fits). As one might imagine, things go wrong and everything is much more complicated than originally thought. It is hard to really give a thorough description of the book because I simply don't want to ruin anything.

I finished the book a few days ago and decided to let it marinate before I wrote a review. I can say that I enjoyed this book more than I did Dragons of Autumn Twilight. I feel like this set up a nice, long, epic fantasy series and the following books will be even better. My main issue with DoAT was that I felt there were a ton of characters to keep up with. I am happy to say this book focuses on a select few making it easier to read and to keep everyone's story lines understandable.

The writing just got better with this book. Weis and Hickman hit the ground running and click on all cylinders with this storyline. For such a long book, there never really was a dull moment. Twists and turns abound and definitely kept me guessing what was going to happen next. I also really enjoyed the world they created when the characters went back in time. They did a fantastic job at immediately putting them into action and danger.

The ending wasn't really an ending but more of a "hold on just a sec, let me write book two" and I'm okay with that. With such an enveloping and epic series, I can't wait to read book two. But I basically have literary ADD so it's hard for me to read two or three books in a series consecutively, so I put down my Krynn friends and picked up a guy I hadn't read in a while. Turns out, Drizzt has been up to quite a bit since we last left off...

RATING: 8/10

I love to read and to discuss books. My preferred genre is sci-fi but I like to read mostly anything.
